WebProNews recently posted this super interesting article about an experiment done by SEOMoz that looked at different Google ranking factors, and how many Search Engine Optimization experts view their importance.

http://www.webpronews.com/google-ranking-factors-2-2011-06

A few things that stuck out for me:

Page-level backlink metrics are the top algorithmic factor (compared to domain-level, link authority, social metrics, etc.)

Diversity of backlinks is greater than raw quantity

Nofollow backlinks do indeed help with rankings (further evidence to support this post)

Pages with more content rank better

Long titles and URLs are bad for SEO

Using keywords earlier in tags and content seems “wise”

Facebook may be more influential than Twitter for ranking, but Matt Cutts says Google can’t see Facebook shares so this doesn’t make sense to me

Google Buzz may be used for indexing (more info here)

Matt Cutts says in general the more content on the home page, the better, but you can also have too much

If you’re a nerd like me, hopefully you find this data useful too!

I just saw a very interesting video post on SEOmoz:

http://www.seomoz.org/blog/correlation-data-for-seo-and-social-media-analysis-part-2-whiteboard-friday

One of the things we did when we saw no-follow links having a really high correlation was we went, well that’s just weird. Maybe what’s going on here is that no-follow links and followed links have a high correlation with each other, and in fact, they do. If you have lots of no-follow links, you tend to also have lots of followed links. So, that makes sense. All right maybe that’s all that’s causing it. But then there’s this one weird, weird data point – well, there’s several weird ones – but there’s this one weird data point around the percentage of followed links having a negative correlation, kind of a strong negative correlation with rankings, which sounds weird, but it suggests that websites and web pages that don’t have any no-follow links aren’t performing as well as those who have at least some or some reasonable percentage of them.

This paragraph caught my attention enormously, mostly because I’ve always been of the opinion that natural backlinking from a variety of sources is the best way to do off-page SEO. I’ve always thought that a healthy mixture of noFollow and doFollow links were important, otherwise it’s pretty frickin’ easy for search engines to notice that you’re trying to “game” your rankings. This is also why my automated social media service, SocialAdr uses a mixture of noFollow and doFollow social media sites.

Aaron @ SEOmoz sums it up well when he adds:

What I think that’s happening is that people who do natural things, normal websites, this is not normal. It is not normal to have a website that only has followed links. It’s almost like, man, you must be doing something funny because normal websites earn links from no-follows. They get linked to on Wikipedia, which is no-follow. They have blog comments that people leave and point to them. Those are no-follow. They have social media profiles. Almost all of those are no-follow. People tweet about them. Those are no-follow. There are all of these no-follow links that exist from sort of good places on the Web where you would naturally be mentioned if you’re a good website.

Thoughts?

A recent link building service I’ve tried and wholeheartedly recommend is One Hour Backlinks. The dude who created Linklicious launched this creative site that makes it super simple and super quick to blast your sites with backlinks. I’m a big fan not only of the ease-of-use of the site but its pleasing design. It’s rare to find an internet marketing / SEO site that doesn’t look like it was designed using Geocities in 1997

Here’s what the order form looks like:

Like I said, super simple.

Use the top slider to select how many backlinks you’d like (the more you want, the cheaper they get per link).

Optionally choose radio buttons for “indexed links only”, “dofollow only”, or “PR1+”, keeping in mind that each option costs extra

Enter your keywords

Enter your URLs

Done!

Once you’ve placed an order and its been completed (mine took about 20 minutes), you can view the data on your “Complete Projects” page:

As you can see even though I paid for 2000 links I received 2420 of ‘em and the Indexation rate was 45%.

The “download links” hyperlink lets you download a CSV file that contains, for each link:

URL

PR

Indexed (yes, no)

DoFollow (yes, no)

Keyword

Target URL

This spreadsheet is super handy for loading into other link building systems to further boost the SEO-juice of your new One Hour Backlinks.

WINNING.

Occasionally I come across an SEO tool that I feel is worthy of blogging about, and oddly enough today I have two of ‘em.

Linklicious

Instead of wasting hours building RSS feeds and pinging the feeds hoping for crawls, Linklicious eliminates all of the guesswork by providing a guaranteed 100% crawl rate. It comes with a WordPress plugin so every post is added to an RSS feed, auto-shortened, pinged, and tracked so you can see exactly when your links were spidered.

Linklicious is quite affordable too: they have a free account and the most feature-packed paid account is only $54/mo.

Here’s a chart that shows the improved crawl late with and without using Linklicious:

Link Pushing

I was looking for a completely automated, hands-off service that combined multiple backlinking techniques. So I headed over to the Warrior Forum and a quick search brought me to this WSO.

Here’s what the “Link Pushing” service offers:

User enters their information; a 2 minute process.

System grabs an article from a random article directory.

System spins the article using The Best Spinner.

System submits the articles to Web 2.0 Properties and Auto-Approve Article directories backlinking to the money site.

System then submits to various Doc share sites splitting the backlinks randomly to the money site, the Web 2.0s and the Auto Approve articles.

System then submits to microblog sites with links randomly split between the money site, the Web 2.0s and the Auto Approve Article sites.

System then submits spun articles to non-auto approval article sites with backlinks to the Web 2.0s and the auto approved article sites.

I had a couple questions before signing up and was super impressed with how quickly and professionally Greg (one of the owners) responded to me. Although this service is in its infancy, so far I really like how easy it is to use and it seems like these dudes have some great features planned in the next release. I don’t have enough data on its effectiveness to improve SERPs yet but I’ll post an update when I do.

Just some general rules I like to follow when running an SEO campaign. Hopefully you find some of these helpful!

Keep the Content Fresh

At the least, a new post or page every week is great to keep the search engine bots continually crawling your site. Plus the more pages your domain has the better. The total Google PR for your entire domain can not exceed the # of pages. So if you have a 1 page site you’ll never have higher than PR 1.

Yes I realize there’s irony in this point because I don’t update this blog nearly that often. But I suppose that’s because this isn’t an income stream for me, I’m just doing it for fun, so I don’t really care too much about its SEO.

If you’re using a blogging platform, remember to use tags, as each tag creates yet another page.

Find Forums to Post in that have Do-Follow Signature Links

Be the first to respond to new threads so your sig will appear near the top of the page

Try to write useful, respectful comments, and not obvious spam…you know who you are…silly spammers

Submit your RSS Feeds to Directories

Search engines love RSS feeds, probably because they are great followers of Tip #1 (Keep the Content Fresh), and constantly updating

Two of the major ones are Feedage.com and Feedagg.com

Use ‘title’ and ‘alt’ HTML Tags for Images

This way you’ll get bonus traffic from search engine image searches, such as Google and Bing (my new favorite).

Social Bookmarking Rules

It’s powerful because each bookmark not only creates multiple backlinks (due to the tags), but also because of the “social” aspect your bookmark could appear on a “top bookmarks” page (with high PR) if other users vote or submit it as well.

With SocialAdr your webpages can be bookmarked (to 15 or so of the major social bookmarking services) up to 420 time per month. And that’s just with the ‘Free’ account!

Keyword Research is ‘Key’

This is one of the (if not THE) most important parts of an effective SEO campaign. Too many people rush through it and don’t take the time to realize either (a) there’s weak traffic for the keywords they’re targeting or (b) the competition is insane and it’s virtually impossible for them to get on Page 1 of Google.

I use a handy app called Micro Niche Finder – it saves a lot of time compared to using the free tools

The free method is simply using the Google External Keyword Tool to find how much traffic each keyword gets and Google (search for the keyword “in quotes”) to find how much competition you have. I prefer > 1000 searches / month with less than 20,000 competition. But there’s a lot of wiggle room in those numbers.

For the last couple months I’ve been working on this new Web 2.0 social bookmarking services community.

What is it all about?

Rather than submitting merely your own bookmarks to the many services available (like Digg, BlinkList, Delicious, etc.), members submit each others’ bookmarks

This makes it less likely that you’ll be considered a “spammer” for constantly promoting only your own sites

This also gives your pages potential to be bookmarked many times with each service, rather than only once like you would do for yourself

The bookmark submission process happens behind the scenes and is fully automated. You only need to enter your account details once.

Members are encouraged to only submit quality pages; we don’t want to promote garbage

The functionality is easy-to-use…it literally takes seconds to add your own bookmarks or to share other members’ bookmarks.

No more messing around with different tag formats! SocialAdr takes care of all that craziness for ya.

What prompted me to create this website was a few things:

Even though SocialMarker is a very useful tool, it can be extremely time consuming because it still involves a lot of manual dragging-and-dropping. Just to submit a single webpage to 20 services usually takes half an hour!

I thought about “link sharing” networks which are (as far as I can tell) getting to be pretty outdated in the ever-evolving interweb. I wanted to come up with a way to combine that philosophy with Web 2.0 social networks and social bookmarking.

I’m a member of Traffic Drill, a forum in which members can request other members to bookmark their webpages. But since the bookmarking process is manual and unable to be controlled in a “fair” manner, it’s entirely possible for a member to contribute WAY more to the community than they receive (I was a perfect example of this). I think it’s a great idea, but I saw room for improvement.

There’s many software packages out there that do social bookmarking submissions, but for each webpage you have, it’ll only be submitted once to every service. With SocialAdr, you can potentially have your webpage submitted tens or hundreds of times to each service! Instead of merely 1 backlink, you’ll get 10, 20, 30…50…etc. And this all happens on auto-pilot.

I’ve had beta testers in the system for about two weeks now and they’ve been great! Lots of bugs have been fixed and new features added.

Hopefully in a few more weeks I’ll be able to open it up to the public!

If you’re interested in helping beta test (it’s really not that difficult and you’ll get free backlinks and traffic while doing it), you can either read this WarriorForum thread, or contact me for more info.

I recently figured out a neat trick for getting a YouTube video to show up on Page 1 of Google search results. We all know that YouTube = Google, so that makes this technique even more powerful than if it was done with some random video site that may be shut down or Google may someday decide to ignore.

Disclaimer:

This trick used to work great before the YouTube blog was changed to a Blogger platform. Now there’s a “NOFOLLOW” attribute on the comment hyperlinks, so it’s arguable how effective this is anymore. But if you want to try it…give ‘er! Report back if it seems to work.

Here’s what ya gotta do:

Create a YouTube profile, if you haven’t already.

Upload a video that’s been keyword-optimized for the Google search phrase you’re targeting. This means the title of the video should be your long-tail keyword. Like “make money online fast”.

Create a Blogger profile (Frank’s is just an example), if you haven’t already. Add a backlink in the “About Me” section which goes to your YouTube profile URL. Again, use the keyword you’re targetting.

Visit the YouTube Blog.

Find a story to comment on.

For the “Comment As” field select “Google Account”.

Write a respectful, relevant comment.

You should be prompted to log into your Blogger account when you click “Preview” or “Post Comment”

Notice a few things,

The Blog page has PR of 9…that’s HUGE!

Wait for your video to appear in Google search results.

?

?

Profit

Done and done.

Lately I’ve been wondering what Google favors more – fresh, unique content or quality (PR 4 or higher) backlinks.

There’s oceans of people that are on either side of the argument. Some say it’s best to have lots of one-way backlinks from respected, authority sites. Others say it’s best to be constantly adding new, unique content.

Personally I think both are useful in their own way. But the nerd inside of me wants to figure out the “magic formula”. Should I spend 50% of my time on each, or 80% on content and 20% on backlinks? It’s quite the quandary.

So I’ve decided to perform a test. The parameters and execution of the test won’t be perfect, as there’s only one of me and I’m not a robot. But nevertheless, I’m hoping it can provide some useful insight into this problem.

Here’s what I aim to do:

Site A (CONTENT)

Niche topic to be determined

A subdomain of an existing generically-named domain that I own (primary keyword subdomain name, with “A” on the end)

WordPress template with all SEO-related plugins activated

Initial content will be 2 or 3 posts, keyword-rich, appropriately tagged

After indexed by Google, I’ll add one new article a day for a month

Each article will use the keywords that I’m targeting

Site B (BACKLINKS)

Same subdomain setup as Site A, but with “B” on the end

Same WordPress setup

Same initial content, but each post rewritten to be unique

After indexed by Google, I’ll add one high-PR backlink a day for a month

No new posts

Sounds like fun, eh? Does anyone have a prediction on which site will rank higher with Google at the end of the month?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

SocialMarker is a free tool that I use fairly often. It makes it a heck of a lot easier to submit my sites to social bookmarking services, than if I was to do it manually.

After my negative review of SocialBot yesterday I figured I should discuss what I do find useful for social bookmarking.

So why do I use SocialMarker?

It helps me get traffic.

It helps me get a lot of backlinks, some from high PR sites.

It works with many of the popular social bookmarking services…51 in total!

It’s free!

Now let me explain how it all works:

First I load up whatever page I want to submit in FireFox. I’ll use im-fun.com as an example.

I have a “SocialMarker” bookmark in my Bookmarks Toolbar. The SocialMarker site explains how to get this setup.

I click the “SocialMarker” bookmark.

Another tab appears with SocialMarker loaded and the Title and URL of my page auto-populated.

I manually enter text (a description of the page) and appropriate tags.

I select the social bookmarking services that I want to submit to (I usually choose the “Dofollow” and “Best” ones, not all of them).

I click “Submit”

SocialMarker loads up a frame that opens up pages for each service, with buttons at the top to navigate between services

I then go from service to service, logging in (often I’m already logged in from a prior session), and submitting my page by dragging and dropping each field from the helpful bar at the bottom of the screen. Often SocialMarker is smart enough to populate these fields without me having to do anything.

So, although there’s still some manual effort involved, SocialMarker does make it easer to submit sites to social bookmarking services. And it sure doesn’t hurt that it’s FREE. I’ll keep using it until I find something better or win the lottery and can finally afford to spend more money on internet marketing tools.

One last thing I should mention – I also use the Tag Format Converter tool (or the downloadable spreadsheet) that I wrote. There’s 5 different tag formats that social bookmarking services require; you can’t just use the default comma-separated format for each service. Yes, it sucks ass. Hopefully one day those social bookmarking bigwigs will decide on a standard format. But that’s just wishful thinking

It has promise, don’t get me wrong. There’s just too many bugs for me to handle.

SocialBot (version 4.0 was the one I tried) was created by a company called IncanSoft. I’m not entirely sure but I think they’re based out of Greece, from reading about them on WarriorForum.

The purpose of this software is to quickly submit pages from your websites to up to 54 social bookmarking services. This list includes many of the popular ones like Digg, Technorati, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Google, etc.

Here’s how it works (supposedly):

Setup a company (could be yourself, could be a client if you’re submitting someone else’s website)

Setup a website that you want to submit social bookmarks for

Setup a profile (a list of social bookmarking services you want to submit to)

Let SocialBot spider your website and find all the pages, or manually setup the pages yourself

Modify the keywords or descriptions for each page being submitted (or leave as is)

Click “GO” and everything should work like a charm

Well, let me just say that I really, really, really was hoping it would work as advertised. I launched SocialBot all wide-eyed and bushy-tailed, eager to let all my social bookmarking dreams become reality.

Unfortunately it was just not meant to be.

Here’s what went wrong:

First I tried the “spider” functionality which is supposed to traverse through your domain and find all the unique pages. Unfortunately it had trouble with link-loops (ie. page A links to page B which links back to page A). One of my sites with about 30 pages, somehow had over 1000 pages according to SocialBot, until I killed the “spider” process.

I tested it out by just submitting to a single service, Delicious. The submission “failed” and I went into the Submission Review field but it was completely blank. I managed to figure out by myself that the password I had entered was incorrect, but gee, thanks for being so helpful SocialBot! Sigh.

After I made a successful submission to Delicious, I manually loaded up the site in FireFox and checked to see what my submitted page looked like. To my utter disgust the tags were all fuxored. I had entered comma-separated tags in SocialBot, but apparently multiple-word tags aren’t possible, because all of my multiple-word tags in Delicious were broken up into single words. (if you’re familiar with my posts you may remember that I’m sort of a tag-Nazi)

I emailed all three above problems to IncanSoft “support”, which was really just the email address of “Big Mike”, the CEO/president/janitor. His trusty sidekick Diego replied saying,

Thanks for your feedback; We are releasing an upgrade at the end of the month, and I’m going to test the bugs you found if they are a real problem.

I thought, ok, no big deal, I can live with the above three issues. So I then created a profile which contained maybe 20 of my favorite social bookmarking services. I queued up 10 or so pages from one of my sites that I wanted to submit to all of them. Then I clicked “Go”. And waited. And waited some more. And had a beer. And came back and noticed that only a single page had been submitted to a whopping 2 services. In about an hour. This was the final straw.

So after all that fun stuff, I requested a refund, which I was given quite quickly so that was nice. Now I’m not sure if SocialBot is just buggy on 64 bit Windows XP, because I occasionally have issues with software that don’t exist on other operating systems. But…even the bugs aside…the speed is what really irked me…

I can honestly submit my sites faster manually to those social bookmarking services than automatically using SocialBot.

So, two thumbs down from me. Sorry “Big Mike”.

I’ve had a lot of people asking me if I’ve found a better tool than SocialBot. Well, since this review I’ve gone ahead and created my own social bookmarking service – SocialAdr – which is entirely web-based, automated, and submits bookmarks from thousands of different accounts. Contact me for a special coupon code!
